A major water supply pipeline rupture in Sokoto State disrupted piped water to an estimated 50,000 households across Sokoto metropolis, forcing residents to rely on alternative water sources including private boreholes and water vendors. The rupture occurred along a transmission pipeline connecting the Sokoto Water Treatment Plant to distribution points across the city.
The Sokoto State Water Board confirmed the rupture and said repair teams had been deployed, but that the scale of the damage required specialised materials that were being sourced from outside the state. Board officials estimated that full restoration would take between seven and fourteen days, depending on the availability of replacement parts.
Residents in densely populated areas including Gadon Kaya, Tambari, and Runnin Sambo reported having no piped water for more than a week, with commercial water vendors charging between ₦500 and ₦1,000 per 20-litre jerrycan — roughly double the normal price. Hospitals and clinics in affected areas reported disruptions to water-dependent services including dialysis and surgical sterilisation, with some facilities trucking in water from unaffected parts of the city.
